We offer well-woman examinations to women of all ages, and as your body changes, your gynecological care and testing may evolve as well.

Your physical
The beginning of your physical exam will start a lot like an appointment with your primary care physician. One of Dr. Jibril’s nurses will document your height, weight, blood pressure, temperature, and pulse. This nurse may also ask you questions to assist Dr. Jibril in making your appointment run smoothly. You will be asked to change into a paper gown before the doctor enters the room. She will then enter the room to perform your exams, which may include the following examinations or testing:

Your pelvic exam
During the pelvic exam, she will visually and manually inspect the outside of your vagina. Dr. Jibril may also feel by hand (just two gloved fingers) your cervix, uterus, and ovaries while pushing on your lower abdomen simultaneously to determine if there are any abnormalities. Then, she will insert a medical instrument called a speculum to open up the area for Dr. Jibril to have an unobstructed view of your cervix and vaginal walls. This is an important step. She will look and feel for infection, abrasions, moles, lumps, discoloration of the tissues, discharge, and more based on any symptoms you may have.

Your pap smear
If a pap smear (or pap test) is necessary at this exam, Dr. Jibril will take a sample of cells by brushing your vaginal walls and cervix. The cells will be sent off to be tested for cervical cancer. This will be performed in tandem with your pelvic exam as you will already be in position for the test.

Your breast exam
While you are still on your back on the examination table, Dr. Jibril will perform your breast examination. She will carefully take a look at each breast, feeling them one at a time for lumps and abnormal tissues. You can expect her to also feel the inside of your armpits for abnormalities as well. A mammogram will be recommended if she feels something during the exam.

Your blood work
We may take blood so that Dr. Jibril can assess your current hormone levels (estrogen, testosterone, progesterone, and more). She may also want to check your thyroid levels as well. She will only request the blood tests that are necessary for your treatment.

Based on your age or symptoms, we may request additional testing outside of the regular well-woman visit or send you to a specialist with a referral. These follow-up test can include (but are not limited to):

  • Upper or lower gastrointestinal (GI) tract exam or x-ray
  • Routine or a diagnostic mammogram
  • Sexually-transmitted disease testing
  • Ultrasounds or sonograms
  • Updates on immunizations
  • Screening for the loss of bone density (osteoporosis)

She may also refer you for other health issues to specialists in the area you are experiencing symptoms or health complications.
